Karwa Chauth is a festival that is observed during the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the month of Kartik. It is mainly celebrated by ladies belonging to states like Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi. Married women observe a day-long nirjala (without water) fast from sunrise to moonrise for the long lives and prosperity of their husbands. The moonrise timings are vital to the festival of KarwaChauth, because people celebrating the festival, break the fast only after sighting the celestial body.
The legend has it that there was once a woman named Karwa who was deeply in love with her husband and this intense love gave her lots of spiritual powers. Once her husband was bathing in a river and that was when he was attacked by a crocodile. Now the courageous Karwa bound the crocodile with a cotton yarn and remembered Yama the Lord of death. Yama was seriously afraid of being cursed by such a devoted and doting wife and thus he sent the crocodile to hell and gave life back to her husband. Another story is that of Satyavan and Savitri. It is said that when Yama, the God of death came to acquire Satyavan's life, Savitri begged in front of Yama to grant him life. But Yama was adamant and seeing that Savitri stopped eating and drinking and followed Yama as he took her husband away. Yama now said Savitri that she can ask of any other boon except the life of her husband. Savitri being a very clever woman asked Yama that she wants to be blessed with children. She is a devoted and loyal wife and won't let any kind of adultery. Thus, Yama had to restore the life into Satyavan so that Savitri can have children.
On the day of Karwa Chauth ladies wakeup in the wee hours to eat "sargi" which is a special meal prepared by their mothers-in-law. Sargi consists of fruits, home-cooked sweets, mathri and dry fruits. It is a gift or a token of a mother-in-law’s gratitude to her son’s wife who prays for his long life and prosperity. After eating Sargi women stay without consuming water and food all day i.e. until the moon rises.
Therefore, KarvaChauth is the festival that creates a special bond between the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Parents send gifts and sweets to their married daughters. Women dress up in bright and colorful traditional dresses. They apply mehndi and wear heavy jewellery on this auspicious occasion. In every household, traditional and delicious food items are prepared but this delicious feast is partaken only after the evening with a karwachauth pooja thali. The karwachauth thali set is decorated with gotapatti and sparkling cloth-piece. Sweets, fenia, dry fruits, matthi and kheer are carefully arranged on this plate. The fast is broken at moonrise when the husband offers his wife the first sip of water and morsel of food after pooja. This is followed by a sumptuous feast.
